“Peace is the one condition of survival in this nuclear age”.
It’s common knowledge that nuclear weapons are the most dangerous threat to the human
society. Nuclear weapons effects are so massive that millions of innocent people have been
instantly killed during World War 2 in Japan, for example. Scientists have been debating for a
long time about the pros and cons of nuclear weapons. Some say they are essential for a
country’s defense, but some still think they are a major threat to the human race and lobby the
laws to cut nuclear arsenals down.
On the one hand, many countries want to increase their influence in the world and that is why
they try to keep their nuclear arsenal. Moreover, it is difficult to find information about a
country's nuclear arms: there are several countries which are unwilling to provide information
about how many nuclear weapons they have, for example, Pakistan, Israel and India. And there
are some countries which don’t want to ratify the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear
Weapons. Thus, the threat of a nuclear war still exists, since these countries do not want to
cooperate with the international community.
On the other hand, the goal of any arms treaty is quite clear-cut: they cry for the reduction of
weapons. And some counties understand it. The only country to have used nuclear weapons was
the United States of America. The US dropped two nuclear bombs on Japanese cities of
Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 and the world witnessed the power of the man-made nuclear
weapons. Many countries fear the irreversible consequences of the use of nuclear weapons und
they offer solutions to this threat, which is a total elimination of nuclear arms. The government
knows that it is technologically possible to eliminate the functionality of all the world's nuclear
weapons in a few months’ time. The process is quick and rather simple. But some countries
severely oppose it.
To conclude, I should say that peace is achievable only by means of total abolition of aggression
and wars, but the most essential condition is the desire to achieve peace. So, countries must use
all means to stop the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
